Human Doubt: Does God Really Know Me by Name?

Have we ever had doubts that God genuinely cares about our lives? How can such a grand Creator of great constellations and grand universes care about such a small, tiny and single entity – me! After all in the big picture of God’s creation I am but an individual mille-spec. Compared to God’s massive creation we are not even larger than the smallest piece of micro-dust! Or are we?

The reality is God values each and every one of us for who we are as individuals, and as members of the larger Body of Christ. God is omnipotent, omnipresent and knows each of us by name. Wow! That is hard to fathom, but it is the truth. We must believe this fact through faith.  Throughout the Bible God interacts with humanity by intervening in our lives. God called Moses, Elijah, Elisha, and so many men and women in Scripture by their names. Our God is an intimate God who loves and cares about his mille-specs of dust – us. We simply have to believe.

According to James of Jerusalem, faith is a necessary virtue that God desires us to embrace. Without faith James says, “we lack wisdom…But ask in faith, never doubting, for the one who doubts is like a wave of the sea, driven and tossed by the wind; for the doubter, being double-minded and unstable in every way, must not expect to receive anything from the Lord.” (James 1:5-8).

God wants to be a part of our lives. Therefore it is vital that we hold on to faith at all costs! We have all experienced the turbulence of doubt. At some point in our lives, if not several, we have experienced being tossed about like waves by the wind. We have known what it means to drift to and fro with no real direction in our lives. Faith takes perseverance and often a determination that many of us find difficult. Yet it is faith in God’s intimate love, omnipotent and omnipresent light that is our divine anchor; a secure line that holds us in place despite the tempest of doubt.

At Jesus’ birth he was called Emmanuel, meaning “God with us.” That is why daily prayer and the reading of Scripture are so important for our spiritual lives. Through them we are constantly reminded that God does know each of us not only by name but by spirit as well. Christ knows our hearts. He knows our souls. He knows our minds. Through prayer and Scripture we are connected to the living God of truth and love. Our connection with Christ with the Father through the love of the Holy Spirit serves to remind us that the Living Word of God is what feeds our faith and makes God divinely personal to our lives. In prayer Christ lives within us, caring abidingly for each of us.
