Called to a Life in Community

As an Episcopal parish, building and sustaining relationships within the Body of Christ and in the community is essential. It is important that we create, cultivate and sustain healthy bonds amongst ourselves and with our neighbors. If we are to live out a life of mission rather than simple maintenance this step is absolutely vital to the church’s life. Jesus gave us the Great Commission, to go forth and spread the Gospel unto all nations. Thus we are not only called by our Lord, but also directed by him to build relationships with our neighbors and invite them to join us as believers. This not only strengthens our bonds with the community, but it deepens our own spirituality.

As a parish how does the community view us? Are we seen as inviting and active amongst our neighbors? Or are we viewed as a club? These are important questions since they affect the vitality and life of the parish as well as the community. All too often as a parish we fall into the trap of thinking what can the community do for us, for example, fundraisers. The real questions to ask are – What can we do for the community? How can we become part of the communal fabric? How can we make Christ known to our neighbors? After all, Jesus also told us to love our neighbor as ourselves.

The opportunity is there for us to create and sustain life long bonds between the parish and the community. We simply have to look for ways to enhance our role in the lives of those around us. More importantly, we are commissioned by Jesus to carry the Gospel message and make believers out of all people.
